Have you ever gone on a hot streak at the blackjack table and walked away thinking, “If only I’d been betting more”? Well that is not what an Atlantic City gambler was lamenting last month after winning nearly $6 million at the high stakes blackjack table at the Tropicana Casino.
The shocking hot streak was recently announced when profits for Atlantic City casinos was announced and the Tropicana was at the bottom due one person’s epic blackjack tear. The result was particularly brutal since the entire Atlantic City gambling industry took a 7% hit last month – a continuation of a slide that it’s been on for 32 months straight.
According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, Atlantic City Casinos posted a drop from $311.5 million last year to $289.4 million this year.
The irony of Tropicana’s bad month is that their high stakes table games have been the main focus of their casino operations – a successful strategy in six of the last seven months. Things seem to have backfired, however, with the $5.8 million beating they took from a single patron.
In reference to the blackjack player’s hot streak, Tropicana’s CEO, Mark Giannantonio stated, “We ran very unlucky.” While Giannantonio wouldn’t disclose the name of the red hot Blackjack player he did say that they were the single biggest winner in the casino’s history and that if it weren’t for them, the Tropicana would’ve actually had a good month.
Giannantonio was recently informed that he would be replaced by veteran gambling executive Tony Rodio who will take over on June 1. According to Giannantonio his dismissal is not connected to the Blackjack beating the Tropicana took.
The Tropicana wasn’t the only Atlantic City casino to take a beating at the table games. The Borgata and Trump casinos both took a 33% hit on table game revenue last month.
